Nursing: voices from the outpatient setting

FEATURE - 14TH MAY 2021

To mark International Nurses’ Day (12th May), the Harley Street Medical Area is spending the week celebrating the role of nurses. Today, we hear from some of the nurses at Mayo Clinic Healthcare who care for patients in the outpatient setting. Working within a team of healthcare providers, they provide services such as pre-visit preparation, procedural support in endoscopy and patient education, and assist wherever they are needed during the patient’s visit.

I’ve worked in the Harley Street Medical Area for a while, but what I find fascinating about working for Mayo Clinic Healthcare is being exposed to a broader perspective of healthcare, not just from a UK practice but US as well. It has been amazing to learn about similarities as well as differences, and the opportunity to share experiences with my colleagues is tremendous.

Moving to London from the US with the Mayo Clinic has been an amazing opportunity. They say that nurses really never stop learning, and moving to a different country has certainly highlighted that! At the same time, it was comforting to realise that the language of providing compassionate care to people really is universal, and that there are so many more similarities than differences.

For me, Mayo Clinic Healthcare is about valuing the contributions of all our nurses internationally, ensuring the patients’ needs come first. From a personal perspective, it’s been an amazing journey – helping to set up the clinic here in London as well as travelling to the US to meet with our nursing teams in Rochester, learning and sharing how patient care is delivered.
